Most seniors and older adults benefit from comprehensive eye exams every one to two years, even when vision feels stable. Regular exams help track gradual changes and support long-term eye health. Book an appointment sooner if any of the following occur:
Certain health factors may also affect exam timing, including diabetes, blood pressure changes, or medication updates.
Senior eye exams at St. Clair Eye Clinic begin with a brief review of current vision concerns, eyewear use, and any recent changes, guiding the exam to reflect your everyday visual needs. The exam is completed in an organized sequence that may include:
Dilation may be recommended to provide a more complete view inside the eye, with expectations explained in advance. The appointment concludes with a clear review of findings, prescription updates if needed, and guidance on next steps, so patients leave informed and confident about their care.
Rather than relying on a standard eye exam format, our eye tests for seniors reflect the increased need for precision, monitoring, and context as we age. Advanced diagnostic tools allow our optometrists to closely assess areas of the eye that are more vulnerable over time, supporting earlier identification of age-related concerns.
St. Clair Eye Clinic has been led by Dr. Neel Vyas since 2008, providing care to patients across Toronto with a strong emphasis on complex and age-related eye health needs. With more than two decades of experience in medical optometry, Dr. Vyas brings deep clinical expertise shaped by work in both optometry and ophthalmology practices, as well as a private surgical clinic.
Posted on Barbara Turner I couldn't be more enthusiastic about Dr. Korkis -- in fact, i think she may have saved the vision in my right eye. I went for a routine eye exam, she diagnosed a possible retinal tear, and through her contacts I was seen by a retinologist only a few hours later. He found a large tear and lasered it on the spot. (He failed to offer any follow-up advice -- although he did schedule another appointment -- but when I called Dr Korkis after the weekend, she immediately told me what I needed to know. In addition to her manifest diagnostic skills, she is friendly, personable, and very efficient. I am so glad to have found her.Posted on Nadia Bove I have been coming with my family since the clinic opened. Dr Vyas has always been excellent in his services and advice. Always taking the time to explain. I am so happy to have this service in our community. Great front staff especially Maria!Posted on Night Rider We have been using this clinic for many years. The place gives you immediate confidence when you enter and know that you have arrived in a professional environment. Dr. Neel Vyas heads this place. He treated me with utmost care and professionalism. He has added new test equipment to do a diagnosis of many kinds. I will continue to visit him because I know the diagnosis will be accurate. The reception staff is quite friendly too. The place is clean, and they display all designer eye glasses for one to choose. Price is very reasonable. I compared it, and I know this clinic is not overcharging me. One more thing: They display artful paintings and photographs for you to enjoy while waiting your turn.Posted on Ariela Gutfrajnd I recently experienced a very painful and scary corneal ulcer that appeared out of nowhere. I had never been to this clinic before but I called on a Saturday as an emergency when my symptoms first started. It ended up being an almost 2-month ordeal that I had to deal with and the care I received here was incredible! Both Dr. Korkis and Dr. Vyas were friendly and caring and were diligent about following up with me to ensure I was healing properly. The front desk staff were also very friendly and helpful! I highly recommend this place for eye care!Posted on JB Fiske I needed emergency eye care, and Dr. Korkis was extremely efficient and reassuring during the process. Senior eye exams commonly monitor conditions that become more prevalent with age, such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. These conditions often progress gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Regular exams allow changes in eye health to be identified and tracked before your vision is significantly affected.
Most older adults should schedule a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years. Some individuals may need more frequent visits based on medical history, medication use, or previous eye findings. Consistent monitoring helps ensure vision changes are addressed promptly and accurately.
Preventive eye care focuses on identifying risks early and maintaining visual function over time. Eye exams help detect subtle changes, assess how aging affects vision, and guide proactive steps that support long-term eye health and daily comfort.
