Eye disease diagnosis and management focuses on identifying conditions that threaten vision and guiding treatment before permanent damage occurs. At St. Clair Eye Clinic, our care goes beyond spotting obvious symptoms. We combine advanced diagnostic testing with expert clinical judgment from our specialists to understand how a disease is affecting the eye now and how it may progress over time.
We commonly diagnose and manage conditions such as:
Each of these conditions behaves differently. Some progress quietly for years without noticeable vision changes, while others cause sudden discomfort or blurred vision that demands prompt attention. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for treatment to be timed correctly.
Managing a progressive eye disease involves tracking subtle changes, adjusting treatment as the disease evolves, and helping patients understand what their diagnosis means for daily life and long-term eye health. Our goals are practical and patient-centred: protect your vision, slow progression where possible, and reduce the risk of avoidable vision loss through informed, ongoing care.
Studies show that only half of Canadians seek treatment for symptoms that might lead to eye diseases and vision loss.
And, since many eye diseases develop without early symptoms, you might go years without realizing you have a vision-threatening problem. Routine eye exams are incredibly important for your ocular health.
Even if you think your vision is fine, booking a comprehensive eye exam can be eye-opening. It might just reveal issues you were unaware of. Book your appointment today.
An eye disease assessment is recommended any time changes to your vision feel persistent, unexplained, or out of character for you, even if they seem minor at first.
You should consider booking if you notice:
It is also important to book proactively if you have diabetes, a family history of eye disease, or existing health conditions that affect circulation or nerve health. These factors can increase risk even before symptoms appear.
Eye disease diagnosis and management at St. Clair Eye Clinic is built around experienced medical optometrists supported by advanced diagnostic equipment. Clinical leadership from Dr. Neel Vyas and Dr. Korkis brings decades of hands-on experience diagnosing and managing complex eye conditions in a medical setting. Their background includes extensive work alongside ophthalmology, which informs how disease is assessed, monitored, and escalated when needed.
Our advanced imaging and testing allow our doctors to examine the optic nerve, retina, and macula in detail, measure structural and functional changes, and compare results across visits with a high degree of consistency. This is especially important for conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease, where progression can be slow and easily missed without precise tools.
Treatment for eye disease is guided by diagnosis, severity, and how a condition is changing over time. At St. Clair Eye Clinic, management plans are built to match the stage of disease rather than applying a fixed solution too early or too late.
Depending on the condition, treatment may include:
Not every diagnosis requires immediate intervention. In many cases, careful observation with consistent testing is the safest and most effective approach. When treatment is needed, timing matters. Acting too late risks permanent vision loss, while acting too early can create an unnecessary burden.
Each step of our eye disease diagnosis and/or management appointments is designed to gather accurate information and translate it into a clear care plan. During your visit, you can expect:
If dilation or advanced imaging is required, this will be explained in advance so there are no surprises. Results are reviewed in plain language, and our follow-up care is clearly outlined:
Posted on Barbara Turner I couldn't be more enthusiastic about Dr. Korkis -- in fact, i think she may have saved the vision in my right eye. I went for a routine eye exam, she diagnosed a possible retinal tear, and through her contacts I was seen by a retinologist only a few hours later. He found a large tear and lasered it on the spot. (He failed to offer any follow-up advice -- although he did schedule another appointment -- but when I called Dr Korkis after the weekend, she immediately told me what I needed to know. In addition to her manifest diagnostic skills, she is friendly, personable, and very efficient. I am so glad to have found her.Posted on Nadia Bove I have been coming with my family since the clinic opened. Dr Vyas has always been excellent in his services and advice. Always taking the time to explain. I am so happy to have this service in our community. Great front staff especially Maria!Posted on Night Rider We have been using this clinic for many years. The place gives you immediate confidence when you enter and know that you have arrived in a professional environment. Dr. Neel Vyas heads this place. He treated me with utmost care and professionalism. He has added new test equipment to do a diagnosis of many kinds. I will continue to visit him because I know the diagnosis will be accurate. The reception staff is quite friendly too. The place is clean, and they display all designer eye glasses for one to choose. Price is very reasonable. I compared it, and I know this clinic is not overcharging me. One more thing: They display artful paintings and photographs for you to enjoy while waiting your turn.Posted on Ariela Gutfrajnd I recently experienced a very painful and scary corneal ulcer that appeared out of nowhere. I had never been to this clinic before but I called on a Saturday as an emergency when my symptoms first started. It ended up being an almost 2-month ordeal that I had to deal with and the care I received here was incredible! Both Dr. Korkis and Dr. Vyas were friendly and caring and were diligent about following up with me to ensure I was healing properly. The front desk staff were also very friendly and helpful! Eye disease assessments involve more in-depth testing and analysis. The focus is on diagnosing medical conditions, tracking structural or functional changes, and determining appropriate management or referral rather than vision correction alone.
Follow-up frequency depends on the condition and its stability. Some patients are monitored annually, while others require quarterly or monthly observation to track progression or treatment response.

Not always. Many eye diseases are managed with monitoring or medical treatment. When surgical or laser care is appropriate, referrals to ophthalmology are made at clearly defined stages.
