What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery typically refers to a group of popular procedures for correcting refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia, or astigmatism

Refractive errors happen when light is not focused directly on the retina. This usually results in blurred vision at various distances.

Laser eye surgery reshapes your cornea, changing how your eye refracts light. These changes make your vision clear, even without corrective lenses.

Just like any surgical procedure, there are risks involved in laser eye surgery. We will walk you through what those risks are and determine whether you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery.

LASIK Surgery

At St. Clair Eye Clinic, we provide LASIK eye surgery consultations.

During a consultation, you will have a comprehensive eye exam. After we assess your overall ocular health, we will set some expectations for surgical outcomes. Not everyone can fully abandon glasses or contact lenses after surgery, but their prescription strength is usually greatly reduced.

Our goal is to ensure LASIK is right for you.

During LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) eye surgery, your surgeon creates a tiny flap from the outside layer of your cornea. The flap is then folded back while your cornea is reshaped. After the reshaping, the flap is placed back in its original position and heals over a few days.

You might be a good candidate for LASIK surgery if your prescription is stable, you do not have any autoimmune disorders, you’re generally in good health, and you do not suffer from persistent dry eyes.

We’re Here for You as You Recover

Your vision will not be clear right away after your LASIK surgery. Your eyes will take between 2 and 3 months to heal. After that, your vision will stabilize.

After your surgery, we will see you for a follow-up appointment to see how your eyes are healing and check for any complications. There will be several follow-up appointments as we take an active role in your recovery.

Depending on how you are healing, we will make recommendations on when you can go back to all your day-to-day activities.
